THE STUDY OF MUSIC
has several benefits. The qualities developed in the study of music
include commitment, coordination, perseverance, and discipline, all
which are beneficial in other areas of life. Studies have shown that
learning to play an instrument increases the number of working neurons
in the brain and enhances the grades of students. Piano study
accelerates the learning processes for all ages. The continued finger
exercise is very beneficial for better dexterity for the older student
battling arthritis. Learning to play an instrument also makes one a
better audience member; one acquires a new respect and appreciation
for a good performer.
I teach music not because I expect my students to become professional
musicians, but because I want music making to be an enjoyable and
motivating experience for the student. My hope is that my students
will develop a love for playing and listening that will last a lifetime.
For the school age student, learning to play the piano is a three
way commitment: student, parent and teacher. I look forward to contributing
my part in this learning process.
